Accra Majestics introduce Rugby League to Ashaiman

Ghana rugby league new boys, Accra Majestics, yesterday 3rd October 2021 introduced the sport of rugby league to the Ashaiman community as part of their ‘Kids Play Rugby League’ initiative as the club looks to promote the sport to a younger generation.

The Ashaiman project which saw a total of twenty-one (21) kids participate was led by Majestics Head of Recruitment, Osman Alhassan, who had tried to introduce rugby league to the community years ago but was hampered by a lack of support.

“The reason we decided to go Ashaiman was due to the community’s untapped sports potential.” This was revealed by Majestics Owner and Assistant Coach, Rachel Ankomah in an exclusive interview with Summer Radio.

“There are many people who are interested in picking up sports in the community but just don’t get the opportunity, as evidenced by our Head of Recruitment [Osman Alhassan] who tried to introduce rugby league to the community years back but had to back out due to inadequate support and the fact that he had to move.”

Also speaking at the launch was Majestics’ player Obed Banfro who revealed his excitement at the project stating we could see a possible national team player coming from the community.

“Ashaiman is populated with people across the country and introducing a new sport to them was a step in the right direction.”

“Those who came around really enjoyed the game and weren’t happy when we told them, we have to close because the night was falling.”

“Those who came around were eager to learn how to play the game. We could have a possible national team player in Ashiman in some years to come.” He concluded

The kids who showed interest in continuing with the sport will be moved to the Firm Foundation Rugby Academy team as per the clubs’ agreement back in August which saw Accra Majestics agree to support the club in terms of coaching and scouting of up-and-coming rugby league stars.

“Honestly, they did show interest in it. It was a bit difficult for them at the start but they loved playing with the oval ball. They actually wanted us to come every Saturday and Sunday,” The Majestics boss said

“We will definitely move them to Firm Foundation Rugby Academy after the necessary processes have been done (i.e. seeking permission from their parents among others).”
